Inspectors Continued from page one filing of the charges. Both men denied any, wrong. doing, and only Schellhase would comment on what he was informed is the reason for the action. Schrum said that legally he should not offer any public statement. The building inspector said he was called into the office, of City Attorney Gilbert Jr.

at 2 p.m. yesterday and informed by Nelson that the reason his resignation was sought was because he has conducted building inspections in North Brunswick. No other reason was given, said Schellhase, who said he understands Schrum was similarly told the case related to plumbing inspections performed in the neighboring township. The mayor said these inspections were "part of it," added, "we have other things as well." Schellhase said the city council years ago, under the two, administration of former Mayor Patricia Q. Sheehan, gave permission to him and Schrum to perform inspections for North Brunswick on properties on.

which North Brunswick inspectors had worked as part of their private employment. Angelo Sansone, one of the North Brunswick building inspectors, has his own construction business and cannot perform inspections on these properties, said Schellhase. Similarly, a plumbing inspector in that township cannot inspect his work, said Schellhase. A source later identified that inspector as Harry Agin. The two North Brunswick inspectors, through their township administration, asked that the New Brunswick inspectors perform this work when necessary, said Schellhase.

He said he and Schrum asked the Sheehan administration for permission, and the city council did provide written approval to North Brunswick oficials. Schellhase and he and Schrum both perform this work on their off time--after working hours, on weekends or lunch hours. Over the past two years, Schellhase said he performed 12 to 15 inspections, the most recent about two months ago. He submits vouchers to North Brunswick and is paid $15 an inspection. Furthermore, Schellhase added, the new administration has known that these inspections were being made.

He said that three months ago he inspected a small addition to house owned in North. Brunswick by one of the brothers of Councilman Rocco J. Catanese, and that he mentioned the inspection in I passing to Catanese at the time. The mayor said the city council unanimously consented to the action to be brought against the inspectors. Under civil service rules, formal charges must be filed and tried at a public hearing for permanently certified employes, such as the two inspectors.

If hearing officer finds that the charges are substantiated, they can be dismissed. Mulligan said he does not know at what point the charges would be made public. Schrum was appointed plumbing inspector in 1968 and coordinator of all inspections the following year. Schellhase has been employed as building inspector four years. Spotswood man faces pot charge MILLTOWN A Spotswood man faces a drug possession charge stemming from a May 11 car accident after which police found almos a pound of marijuana in his vehicle, police reported.
